My name is James W. Moch. I am 48 years
old and was born in a small town called Elk Run Heights, Iowa. My father got me interested
in woodworking as soon as I was old enough to drive a nail without bending it. In junior
and senior high school I took all the woodworking classes that were available.
In 1969 I joined the United
States Army Field Artillery where I spent the next 20 years. During my off duty time I
continued my love of woodworking. Sometimes it paid off! If you are ever
have a chance. Go to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery Regiment
Headquarters in Fort Lewis, Washington and you will see the Regimental Colors framed on the wall. I did the
framing back in 1985, the Sergeant Major put the colors in the frame. That flag had been made over 100 years ago
and after all I do woodworking not, "flag destruction".
I think the frame has held up well through the years considering that it was
built in Schofield Barracks and then moved to Fort Lewis.
After retiring from the service in 1989, I worked at a sawmill for 10 years. A handy place
to be for a woodworker as you can get lumber cheap! The hard part was being patient enough
to let the wood dry out!
While working at the sawmill, I
continued to build whatever my friends and neighbors wanted or needed. I have built
everything from a gun cabinet to a picture frame, including end tables, coffee tables,
yard tables; you name it. My hunting buddies even started bringing me their broken or
scarred up rifles to see if I could repair the damaged stocks. So far the only comment I
have had on a stock repair is: "How did you do that? It looks like new!" They
all told me I should have my own shop, so here it is!
